Crews respond to wind turbine fire in Huron County

Firefighters and deputies were called after a wind turbine caught fire near the village of Elkton. Jeff Smith, an Elkton village official, said the fire, which broke out on April 1,  is 300 feet in the air and crews cannot reach it to extinguish the blaze. The turbine is part of the Harvest II wind energy facility placed in service in November 2012 by Exelon and is one of 33 Vestas V-100 (1.8 MW) turbines erected in Oliver, Chandler and McKinley townships.

High winds topple turbine

Garner didn't speculate on what caused the wind turbine to fall over. However, other turbine mishaps that have occurred during high winds were because the turbine's braking system failed. Modern wind turbines are designed to shut off or slow their blades during high winds. If the blades turn too fast, it can cause the entire structure to become unstable and then disintegrate.

The quixotic myth of 'renewable energy'

The oft reiterated promise of “cheap renewable green energy” is a quixotic myth, fabricated by those who have an economic incentive to lie, championed by those with a political agenda to advance, and believed by those who are too intellectually lazy to do basic research. While there is no “free lunch,” there are practical, cost-effective solutions.

Explosive troubles with Wyoming County Wind Projects

I write here a cautionary warning for those who may mistakenly think that today’s wind energy is that quaint throwback to olden days. Old –fashioned windmills were not connected with miles and miles of high voltage underground and overhead wires. If your rural community is presently under siege by a mega-billion industrial scale wind turbine  developer, Buyer beware. (Editor's note: The incident described in this piece involving the turbine failure occurred the week of August 27, 2018)

Officials reviewing options on wind turbine

According to the engineer’s findings, the turbine experienced an arc flash that caused an electrical fire. Officials with Vestas have declared the nacelle a total loss, though the tower and foundation are reusable, and will be providing the University with the costs for options ranging from decommissioning of the turbine to replacement of the unit.
