County council approves placement of electrical collection lines in right of way for proposed wind farm project

Vulcan County council has approved a licence to place electrical collection lines in Vulcan County’s right of way for a proposed 400 mega-watt (MW) wind farm in the Lomond area. The Jan. 15 decision came despite opposition from local landowners, expressed both verbally and in many letters provided at the meeting, and a petition against the Buffalo Plains wind farm.

Sharp Hills wind farm near Oyen gets new approval

Under the terms of the contract with the Alberta Electrical System Operator, the company is not penalized for not meeting the stated in-service date. However, the contract period remains in place, effectively meaning a shorter term. ...The three winning bids in the 2017 auction stated prices that averaged slightly less than 4 cents per kilowatt hour. The average 2019 year-to-date power price in Alberta was 5.5-cents per kilowatt hour as of Dec. 18.

Province revokes approval for nearly-finished Nation Rise Wind Farm

The provincial government has withdrawn the renewable energy approval authorizing the creation of the Nation Rise Wind Farm. The withdrawal of the approval means the project will come to a halt, despite the fact the wind farm is largely complete, with several wind turbines erected and ready to begin generating power. ...Environment Minister Jeff Yurek said he decided to revoke Nation Rise’s renewable energy approval out of concern for the wind farm’s impact on local bat populations.

Wildlife protection group opposes wind farm expansion

The P.E.I. Energy Corporation wants to add seven new turbines to the 10 currently in place, which would double the electricity output of the farm. The turbines would be larger than the current ones, and that's something that worries the group. "These are going to be phenomenal in size. It's going to be probably the largest game changer in this area of Prince Edward Island," said Fred Cheverie, watershed coordinator with the group.

New method of decommissioning wind turbine concrete bases with water jets

With this new removal technique, the top metre of the base is removed. A backhoe digs a hole around the concrete base once the tower is removed. Then an automated high-pressure water jet is set up to fire a jet of water up close and rotate around the concrete base, directing the thin, high-pressure stream of water, cutting deeply into the base, slicing both the concrete and the rebar inside. The water jet rotates around the concrete pillar firing the high-pressure water jet until it is done. The top metre of the top of the concrete pillar is then lifted off.

Doug Ford hates wind farms. This big one blew right by him

Nation Rise Wind Farm received its “Renewable Energy Approval” on May 4, 2018, a Friday. The following Wednesday, May 9, the election writ was dropped and on June 7, the Liberals and their Green Energy ways were gone. In July, the Ford government cancelled 758 early-stage renewable energy projects. But not Nation Rise. Described as too far along in its milestones, it went ahead and today there are service roads being built, massive concrete bases being poured and the blades and hubs are being stockpiled for installation.
