Flaming crows: bird on wire sparks bushfire

Birds electrocuted by a power transmission line at a wind farm near Canberra in January sparked two bushfires — one of which burned 3400ha and caused millions of dollars of damage in lost livestock and property. The fires near Tarago, east of Canberra, were started at different spots on a transmission line taking power from 23 turbines on the Woodlawn wind farm to its substation.

Comments by Queensland Government Noise Expert - Dr Antoine David

R_15-127_-_file_a_thumb These documents, secured under the Australian Right to Information (RTI) Act, reveal that warnings from the Queensland Government's own noise expert were not provided to the public or passed on to the Planning Department or the Minister for Planning to inform the wind turbine siting process. Dr Antoine David, the noise expert in the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection provided his superiors with a list of nine points of concern regarding the draft Wind Farm Code. The list of his concerns is provided below and can also be found on page 7 of the attached document. A RTI request revealed that, despite making his concerns known within his department, Dr. David's findings were not forwarded to the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, the department responsible for developing the current draft (version 2) of the Wind Farm Code.
