No cause of the accident has been officially reported but according to first available information, a short circuit was likely what triggered the fire.

According to the Land Security Center (LSZ) Burgenland, two ÖAMTC emergency medical helicopters were in operation at the scene of the accident. Christophorus 3 flew a seriously injured man to a hospital in Vienna, the second victim was taken to a hospital in Graz by Christophorus 16.

The plant, which is operated by Energie Burgenland Windkraft, had been regularly maintained in accordance with regulations, Energie Burgenland reported in a statement. Experts from the company were already in place to determine the cause.
