The next election around here will test the force behind wind energy support in Lincoln County.
The company behind a proposed wind farm has gathered enough signatures to challenge a new set of rules adopted by county commissioners earlier this year. Dakota Power Community Winds' plan faced opposition from landowners near the proposed site in the southern part of the county for years and say the new setback and noise rules make their project impossible to build.
"You have maintenance and operations going on, you have people supporting that, you have tremendous cost of locating equipment to erect turbines. So it's pretty unfeasible to do less than 30, 40, or 50 turbines in a wind farm otherwise the costs are too high," Brian Minish said.
Since it is a referendum, a 'no' vote is cast in-favor of expanded wind energy. Election Day in Lincoln County is Tuesday, July 18th.
