Power line controversy could impact Oswego and Jefferson county communities

PULASKI -- A change in plans by the New York Power Authorityhas resurrected a controversy over power lines through the North Country. The authority recently announced that it would no longer offer a power purchase agreement with a company proposing a wind farm on Galloo Island on Lake Ontario.
Communities along the eastern shore of Lake Ontario were concerned about high voltage transmission lines going through their borders. Had the agreement with NYPA gone through, many hoped the transmission lines would be under water and out of sight.
But now community leaders worry that plans for over land transmission lines are now back on the front burner. Oswego County legislator Shawn Doyle opposes the Galloo Island wind project because he feels the power lines have become visibly close to the village of Pulaski.
He says, "While the wind farm would create a few jobs for Galloo Island the transmission lines could hurt tourism through Oswego County and affect jobs in that industry."
The Upstate New York Power Corporation would like to build the eighty-four turbine, 246 megawatt project but Doyle complains the company has not revealed its plans for the transmission lines.
