Massive Otago Wind Farm Planned

One of the biggest wind farms in the Southern Hemisphere is planned for Central Otago.

Meridian Energy hopes to build the wind farm on the Lammermoor Range, west of Dunedin.

A spokesperson for the company, Gerald Raymond, says the plan is to build a 176-turbine wind farm across five private properties.

He says the wind farm would be one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and would supply 630 megawatts of power - almost enough to meet the needs of the whole of the South Island.

Mr Raymond says the wind farm would be developed in stages, with the maximum turbines being erected if there is the demand.

He says the property owners are supportive of the idea, and agreements with them are being worked on.

Meridian is also starting consultation with the wider community, with information days to be held at a number of locations in central Otago in the coming week.
