A small Del Mar company said Wednesday that it has landed a bigger stimulus check from the federal government than expected for developing a big wind farm in Washington state. Cannon Power Group said it is getting $200 million in stimulus funds for its latest work on a 500 megawatt farm on ridgelines along the Columbia River.

DEL MAR - A small Del Mar company said Wednesday that it has landed a bigger stimulus check from the federal government than expected for developing a big wind farm in Washington state.
Cannon Power Group said it is getting $200 million in stimulus funds for its latest work on a 500 megawatt farm on ridgelines along the Columbia River 120 miles east of Portland, Ore. The funds represent about 30 percent of construction costs.
In November, the 25-worker company had estimated it would get $170 million.

In November, the 25-worker company had estimated it would get $170 million.
Cannon has completed 400 megawatts out of the 500-megawatt farm in Washington state, called Windy Point/Windy Flats. The electricity that project produces is sold to California irrigation districts and municipal utilities, including those serving Los Angeles , Anaheim and Riverside.
As part of the stimulus package, the federal government is giving grants to companies that invest in renewable energy technology.
In another development, Cannon said it has signed a lease with Colorado State University to develop another massive wind farm on 8,000 acres in Northern Colorado.
In addition to providing power - to the university or other users - that project will also help researchers figure out better ways of converting wind power into electricity, said Gary Hardke, Cannon's president.
Cannon is also developing a big wind project just south of Tecate, in northern Baja California, designed to sell power to Mexico and the United States.
California requires utilities to get a big portion of the energy they sell their customers from renewable sources like wind and solar. Hardke says the state's regulations are so time-consuming that it's faster to develop projects elsewhere and sell the power into the state.
