Otter Tail Power Co. wants to increase a monthly charge that its North Dakota customers pay for wind power.

An average Otter Tail residential customer who uses 750 kilowatt-hours of electricity each month now pays a $2.77 charge for wind-generated power.

It's to pay for the utility's share of wind energy projects near Langdon and Lake Ashtabula in eastern North Dakota.

Otter Tail wants to raise the wind power bill to $4.29 a month. It would help pay for Otter Tail's acquisition of 49.5 megawatts of power from a new wind farm near Luverne.

Public Service Commissioner Brian Kalk said ratepayers have until May 12 to request a hearing on the proposal.

Otter Tail has about 57,000 North Dakota electric customers.
