A photo from the site provided to this newspaper showed the windmill’s stem bent roughly in half and its blades scattered around it. The wind farm is west of the unincorporated town of Ocotillo about 30 miles west of El Centro. It faced strong opposition among town residents from the start and some opponents continually criticize it as defective and inefficient.
Residents in Ocotillo are voicing concerns after yet another wind turbine collapse at the Ocotillo Wind Energy facility. There were no injuries or damage to other structures when the 300-foot-tall turbine crashed to the desert floor at the trouble-prone facility on Thursday, September 16. But residents are raising serious questions over public safety at the site, which produces energy to SDG&E to power the San Diego region.
Two wind turbines along County Road 650 south of Helena were damaged earlier this month, though the cause of the damage still is under investigation. Bryan Garner, director of communications at NextEra Energy Resources, said in an email the turbines at the Skeleton Creek Energy Center were damaged on Aug. 11 and 12.
Workers at the Merkur wind farm in the German North Sea found signs of stress fatigue on the support structures of the “helihoist” platforms on some of the project’s GE Haliade turbines. Power generation at the 396-megawatt array was temporarily halted to come up with a solution to the problem, but the wind farm has since come back online. In June, Ørsted said it had put the five-year-old Block Island Wind Farm “on pause as a precautionary safety measure” to see if similar problems had arisen with the platforms at the top of the turbines that equipment and workers can be lowered onto from helicopters.
Ørsted, the Danish energy company that purchased the wind farm from the original developers, Deepwater Wind, said that four of the five turbines were taken offline earlier this summer as a precaution after GE, the manufacturer of the 6-megawatt turbines, identified the stress lines in the turbines.
Ørsted, the company that owns the wind farm, tells 12 News they’re conducting routine maintenance on the turbines. Right now, a spokesperson said they’re in the process of repairing stress lines inside four of the turbines.
LYFORD, Texas — A wind turbine caught fire in Lyford on Monday.

JOHNSTON COUNTY, OKLAHOMA (KXII) - A wind farm turbine in Johnson County caught fire, after it was struck by lighting during Friday night’s storms.
Ada-Liberty Township Fire Department was called to a wind turbine fire reported at 4:31 a.m., Friday morning (March 26), according to the Ada police report.

MidAmerican Energy says it has idled nearly four-dozen electricity-generating wind turbines while workers check them for safety after blades broke off of two similar turbines over the past two months. Those blade failures follow a break earlier this year and one in 2019.
