Buying votes

Increasingly, local concerns on wind have threatened to slow the advance of wind power. Solar developments also provoke local opposition from time to time, but the danger posed to pristine environments by solar projects has not been as acute as the danger from wind projects. Sensing that the wind was blowing against them, Iberdrola has decided to pay off the voters. That is an astonishing corruption of the democratic process.

County Mayor says voters should decide on wind farm

Gibson County Mayor Tom Witherspoon gave members of the Milan Rotary Club a rundown of the county’s current business last Thursday, but no topic was more controversial than that of the proposed Wind Farm in the northern area of the county. The vote on zoning for the site, a 16,000-acre area of land between Kenton and Yorkville, was tabled earlier this month by the County Commission, but residents and county officials are still discussing the matter.

The former commissioner of the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, Steve Wright, disputed that the project was likely to benefit the goal of curbing global warming. “I am here because this is a reflection of such poor energy policy and poor climate change policy. This development on public land will do nothing but damage the best habitat for black bears in the state, and will do nothing for climate change action."

HollandSelect Board Opposes Wind Test Tower

The select board voted Wednesday to oppose a tower to measure wind speeds for an industrial wind turbine planned on Dairy Air Farm. The board is expected to seek to become an intervenor in the state review process of the meteorological or “met” tower.
