Wind Energy and Congressman Mollohan

Thanks for publishing Congressman Molohan's rebuttal to your article. He is right. I find it hard to believe that, after all the facts and truths about wind energy that have been revealed during the past 2-3 years, that somebody at HNN would approve the initial story that you published.

You may want to have the author of the story check out such web sites as:

Industrial Wind Action Group: http://www.windaction.org/
National Wind-Watch: http://www.wind-watch.org/

Also, I'm attaching a just-completed paper on NY Governor Spitzer's "energy plan." While the paper is focused on NY, much of it would apply equally in WV. The Executive Summary from the paper is shown below.

As you may know, WV also grants huge tax breaks (in addition to the big Federal breaks) to wind turbines. Specifically, WV exempts "wind farms" from abut 90% of property taxes and the Business and Occupation Tax. If you are not aware of the magnitude of those, please let me know and I'll send you a paper that shows them in detail, or you can find it at: http://www.windaction.org/documents/2490

It's tax breaks like those provided by the federal government (the PTC and 5-year accelerated depreciation) and the WV tax... more [truncated due to possible copyright]

It's tax breaks like those provided by the federal government (the PTC and 5-year accelerated depreciation) and the WV tax breaks that made it possible for the FPL Group (parent of FPL Energy -- owner of the Mountaineer "wind farm" -- to avoid paying income tax for 2 years even though the company reported over $2 billion in profits. You can find more on that at: http://www.windaction.org/documents/92

Good luck. I do hope the author of your story has time to dig deeper on wind energy issues
