A fire that broke out in a wind turbine near the A7 motorway close to Kitzingen has been extinguished, but the area remains dangerous due to potential falling debris. Two turbine blades are still precariously attached, prompting police to cordon off the area and warn onlookers against approaching. The fire, which could not be fought directly due to its height, led to the temporary closure of the motorway and continued risk from debris. (Translation to English via Google Translate)

Kitzingen – The fire at a wind turbine near the A7 motorway close to Kitzingen has been extinguished. Nevertheless, police are still warning onlookers not to get too close to the turbine: debris could fall, posing a serious risk to life. “The fire is out. But two blades are still hanging up,” explained a spokesperson for the Lower Franconia Police Headquarters . “Because of the potential for falling debris, the area remains closed off.” The third blade fell relatively early on.
On Saturday evening, a fire broke out high up in the more than 100-meter-tall wind turbine. Several motorists had noticed heavy smoke coming from the turbine. Local fire departments responded with a large contingent of firefighters. Shortly after their arrival, the turbine was engulfed in flames.
The fire department could only wait.
However, the fire department was unable to extinguish the fire. A fire department spokesperson explained that there was no equipment capable of reaching a height of over 100 meters to fight the fire from the outside. At the same time, deploying personnel inside the wind turbine to fight the fire was out of the question. "That means, in this case, we have no other option than to keep our distance and monitor the situation."
The A7 motorway was therefore temporarily closed between the Kitzingen and Marktbreit junctions for about three and a half hours on Saturday evening. The fire could not be extinguished initially on Sunday either, because the propeller was in danger of falling. Emergency services therefore cordoned off the area within a 300-meter radius of the wind turbine.
Spectators put themselves in mortal danger
Police issued a stark warning to onlookers, urging them not to enter the cordoned-off area and, most importantly, not to go under the wind turbine. "Due to the possibility of further falling debris, there is an increased risk of injury and death."
According to a police spokesperson, many onlookers came to the scene of the fire on Sunday. Some even went very close to the still-burning wind turbine and collected fallen debris.
The fire eventually extinguished itself, and the operation is now over for the police and fire department. "But it's still cordoned off, and a security service is on site," the police spokesperson explained. "The operating company is now taking care of the repairs."
