... more [truncated due to possible copyright]In a bold move today, Patricia Morgan, the Republican candidate challenging U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, demanded an immediate pause on offshore wind energy projects, citing alarming spikes in marine mammal deaths and mounting concerns over the environmental and economic repercussions of industrializing our oceans.
“Offshore wind development has surged ahead without the necessary scientific studies or answers about its real effects on our environment,” Morgan stated. “We are witnessing a 200%-250% increase in marine mammal deaths since these wind farms began offshore drilling operations. The squid fishery has vanished. This cannot be ignored.”
Morgan’s primary concern centers on the potential devastation to fragile ocean ecosystems. She specifically targeted the Bokalift, a massive ship involved in the construction of these wind farms, which she claims could wreak havoc on the environment. “Twelve years ago, when that activity was suggested for our ocean, we sent a strong ‘No’. We would not permit the industrialization of our coastal waters. But in a complete about-face, Sheldon Whitehouse is now a champion of the environmental destruction that this ship represents. It is inexcusable.”
The Bokalift is slated to dig trenches for cables connecting turbines to the Brayton Point substation, but Morgan warned of the unknowns lurking beneath the bay’s surface. “No studies have been done on the sediments of our bay. We don’t know what chemicals or harmful sludge may be there—possibly mercury, or other hazardous substances. We are rushing into this with no idea of the long-term damage we may be inflicting on our residents’ health and our shellfishing industry.”
Morgan slammed Senator Whitehouse for his push for taxpayer subsidies to fund these wind projects while leaving residents with more questions than answers. “While politicians like Sheldon Whitehouse push for more taxpayer subsidies to fund these projects, we’re left with more questions than answers about what’s really happening in our waters.”
The candidate didn’t hold back when discussing the financial implications of the wind farms. “Families in Rhode Island are already paying much more for energy than they would with natural gas. Offshore wind electricity costs as much as 7X to 10X more than electricity generated using natural gas. It is the most expensive form of electricity by a wide margin, and unfortunately, it is also intermittent and unreliable.”
Morgan warned that this energy dependency could lead to brownouts and a crippling economy. “Residents should expect brownouts if we continue on this path of expecting our state to be 100% dependent on offshore wind to power our state. Our electric bills will be crushing. Industry will leave, taking their jobs and our children with them.”
She also raised alarms about the billions needed to upgrade the electric grid, a cost likely to fall on ratepayers. “It would cost hundreds of billions of dollars to convert every home, lawnmower, and car to electric and add charging stations everywhere to accommodate their batteries. Our economy cannot support this.”
Morgan underscored the potential harm to Rhode Island’s tourism and fishing industries, which collectively contribute billions to the state’s economy. “Jobs will be lost. Families will struggle. Why have none of our politicians called for a thorough analysis to look into other alternatives like nuclear energy, which is much cleaner and will not wreak havoc on our economy and local fishing industry?”
As she concluded, Morgan reiterated her commitment to protecting Rhode Island’s natural beauty and economic stability. “The Ocean State won’t be the Ocean State anymore if we let these projects continue unchecked. Offshore wind is an assault on both our natural resources and our economy.”
“Until we have real scientific answers about why marine animals are dying, what chemicals are being disturbed, and a clear understanding of the financial impact, I am calling for an immediate halt to these offshore wind projects. We need practical, affordable energy solutions, not reckless experiments that threaten our future.”

For the third time in four years, Rhode Island’s @westplaceanimalsanctuary is a finalist for the Defender Service Awards, a prestigious recognition for nonprofits making a significant community impact. The sanctuary, which has been a previous finalist in the Animal Welfare category, is now vying for the Defender Service Honorees award, with the winner determined by public voting from October 2 to October 17.
Founded in 2007, West Place Animal Sanctuary has served as a beacon of compassion on New England’s “farm coast,” providing rescue, rehabilitation, and care for farm animals and wildlife. As Rhode Island’s oldest and largest farm animal sanctuary, it has been recognized for its lifesaving efforts and advocacy for animals rescued from abuse, neglect, and cruelty.
This year, West Place is calling on animal lovers, Land Rover fans, and all Rhode Islanders and New Englanders to help push them to the top. Voting is quick, free, and can be done daily through their website, www.westplace.org/defender.
“Winning the 2024 Defender Service Award would shine a national spotlight on farm animals, an overlooked and underrepresented animal population,” said Wendy Taylor, founder and executive director of West Place. She emphasized the significance of representing the smallest state in this national competition. “Rhode Islanders are proud and passionate about animal welfare. Your daily votes can help us grow, expand, and give more animals the second chances they deserve.”
The grand prize is a fully customized Defender 130 vehicle, tailored to meet the nonprofit’s needs, a vital tool for West Place’s ongoing mission.
West Place is gearing up for what Taylor calls “a two-week sprint to the finish.” They are counting on local support to secure this victory and continue making a difference for vulnerable animals across Rhode Island and beyond.
Daily voting period: October 2 - October 17

This Saturday, September 28, sailors from Newport and beyond will gather for the annual Sail for Hope regatta, a race that’s about more than just speed—it’s about giving back. This year’s race will raise funds for three organizations: the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - Rhode Island Chapter, Warrior Sailing, and Sail Newport’s Financial Aid Fund.
For Kerrie Constant of AFSP-RI, the event is critical. “The funds donated will provide essential support for suicide prevention programs, advocacy for mental health legislation, and resources for survivors of suicide loss.”
Warrior Sailing, dedicated to empowering wounded veterans through maritime education, will also benefit. “Warrior Sailing’s impact is powered by donations, and we are grateful for Sail for Hope’s support,” says Ben Poucher.
Sail Newport rounds out the beneficiaries, using the funds to offer affordable sailing programs for local youth.
Originally founded in the wake of 9/11 as “Sail for Pride,” the race has become a beloved local tradition. Sailors will navigate an 18-mile course around Conanicut Island, competing in various classes while showing their support for these important causes.

It’s baaaaack! The 760-foot-long, Cyprus-flagged behemoth, Bokalift 2, quietly dropped anchor just south of the Newport Bridge Tuesday night, but don’t worry, folks — Revolution Wind swears on a stack of Bibles that it has absolutely nothing to do with the alarming uptick in whale deaths off our coast.
The crane ship, which looks like it could pluck the moon from the sky, is part of Revolution Wind’s offshore wind farm project, and if you’re wondering whether its massive underwater construction is somehow connected to the mysterious 83 dead whales washing up on U.S. shores in 2023, well, that’s just your imagination running wild. Seriously, who are you going to believe — the corporate overlords or your own lying eyes?
Despite the wind farm activity coinciding with the “unusual whale mortality rate” (as NOAA delicately puts it), there’s absolutely nothing to see here. Revolution Wind has assured the public that the project has zero impact on marine life. Move along, people!
Sure, the 83 whales who turned up dead in 2023 is a tragic number, but hey, who’s counting? The wind farm giant is ready to keep cranking out those eco-friendly turbines, and they’re banking on you not noticing what might be lurking beneath the surface.
But it’s fine, right? Nothing to worry about at all. Just a massive ship, some underwater construction, and an entire community of whales taking an early retirement from the ocean. Let’s just cross our fingers and hope that this is all just one giant coincidence.
Whale lovers and conspiracy theorists, go home! Revolution Wind has spoken — and there’s nothing more to discuss... unless another dead whale shows up on the beach.

I told y’all I wasn’t going down the fall foodie road until the autumnal equinox was upon us, and we have arrived. Butternut squash soup, meaty braises, rib-sticking chili, whole, roasted garlicky lemon chicken, apple crisp and pumpkin cheesecake are calling my name. But first, coffee.
Not long ago, I covered this topic for another outlet and was roasted (lol) for perceived omissions, to the point where said outlet printed angry letters to the editor about the fact that I had left their personal favorites out. So, allow me to clear something up before we get into our first cup. The column is called “What She’s Having,” the “she” being “me.”
New on my go-to list is @grafikcoffee in Portsmouth, which gets high marks for their small-batch, house-roasted beans and solid, reasonably priced breakfast and lunch menus; bonus points for good vibes, local artists’ work and beans sourced from Brazil, Guatemala, Tanzania, Kenya, Sumatra and a woman-owned farm in DR Congo, sold in bulk.
You can’t cawfee-tawk in Newport without a big shout-out to C.J. Barone, whose three local @empireteaandcoffee outposts are found in Newport and Bristol and who’s been serving up java on the island for two decades at the Bohemian style café on Broadway and the more modern spot on Bellevue Avenue. A selection of both single origin beans and blends are roasted daily in small batches.
Ever since my first cup, I’ve been shouting out and touting the virtues of the employee- owned @custommhousecoffee in Middletown, with its multiple organic and single origin selections and several blends, roasted in small batches, yielding more than a ton of beans daily.
@driftcafenpt in downtown Newport sources beans from Necessary Coffee, dedicated to ethical practices from seed to cup. From hot drip to cold brew, to exotic espresso and latte blends spiked with spices, health supplements, house made syrups, CBD and more.

The Rhode Island DEM has officially begun construction on a major renovation project at Roger Wheeler State Beach in Narragansett!
The project includes a brand-new, ADA-accessible boardwalk stretching along the beach, complete with modern amenities like shade structures, foot-washing stations, sidewalks, and concrete benches. The goal? To make this beloved family-friendly beach more accessible and enjoyable for everyone!
In addition to the boardwalk, a new concrete retaining wall will replace the aging steel bulkhead originally installed in the 1950s. This upgrade will help protect the beach from the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels, flooding, and erosion.
The beach is also home to the federally protected Piping Plover, and DEM is working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to ensure the protection of the shorebirds and their nests throughout the construction process.
Funding for the project includes $3.1 million from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, combined with contributions from Rhode Island’s 2021 Green Economy Bond. DEM is committed to improving public assets and strengthening climate resilience across the state.
While the work will continue through the off-season, visitors can expect Roger Wheeler to be fully open by Memorial Day 2025 – just in time for the summer season!

๐ธ 33 years ago today, Nirvana changed everything.
On September 24, 1991, the world was introduced to Nevermind, an album that didn’t just top the charts—it turned the entire music industry upside down. Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl took the raw energy of grunge from the underground and made it mainstream, knocking none other than Michael Jackson off the top spot in the process.
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” became the anthem of a generation almost overnight. You couldn’t turn on the radio, walk through a store, or flip through MTV without hearing that explosive guitar riff and Kurt’s anguished scream. This wasn’t just a song—it was the rallying cry for anyone who felt out of place, disillusioned, or fed up with the glossy world of ‘80s excess.
But Nevermind wasn’t just about rage—it was about emotion in all its raw, unfiltered forms. From the aching vulnerability of “Come As You Are” to the dark introspection of “Lithium,” this album spoke to the heart of every outsider and misfit, giving them a voice. It redefined what mainstream music could be. No more polished pop stars—this was gritty, honest, and real.
33 years later, Nevermind still feels as fresh and rebellious as it did when it first dropped. It didn’t just change music—it changed culture. It made flannel shirts cool, gave us a new way to talk about our emotions, and showed the world that sometimes the most powerful voices come from the fringes.
So here’s to Nevermind, the album that kicked down the door for a whole new era of music and made alternative the new normal. Happy 33rd anniversary to a masterpiece that still speaks to our souls. ๐

The rodeo may be over, but one rogue bull is still running wild through the streets of North Attleboro. After a chaotic escape from Sunday’s rodeo at the Emerald Square Mall, rodeo personnel are now scrambling to track down the last of the eight runaway bulls that broke loose.
While seven were corralled late Sunday night, one fearless bull is still on the lam as of Monday afternoon, lurking somewhere in the Allen Avenue area.
In a statement, the North Attleboro Fire Department assured residents that no town assets or emergency personnel are involved in today’s search. Instead, it’s up to the rodeo’s wranglers, now getting a high-flying assist from the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing.
Locals are advised to keep their eyes peeled and steer clear of the area as the search continues.
Rodeo personnel are on full alert, hoping to corral the final escapee before it causes any more mayhem.
