Annual additions of wind capacity fell during the administration of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2018-2023) from 2.11GW in 2018 to 1.5GW in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Brazil’s new president Lula da Silva has vowed to ramp up renewable energy in the country, which currently has 24.7GW of installed wind capacity, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.

Siemens Gamesa has a 19.7% market share of the country’s operational wind fleet, according to Windpower Intelligence.

It stated that it would continue operations in Brazil and was optimistic about the future of wind energy in the country.

“We remain confident of the critical role that renewables and the wind industry will play in helping Brazil achieve its energy needs and, therefore, we reinforce our commitment to continue our operations in Brazil,” the spokesperson said.

They added that the hibernation at the Camaçari plant would not impact delivery orders for existing onshore wind contracts the company has, including maintenance and operations at wind parks and future projects.

Turbine manufacturers sometimes ramp production up and down, pausing or hibernating manufacturing operations at certain locations to respond to market conditions. For example, Siemens Gamesa recently resumed production at its blade factory in Iowa, US, after a temporary pause, and plans to do the same with its nacelle factory in Kansas in the first half of this year.
