The 75-MW, 107-turbine West Texas Wind Energy (Southwest Mesa) wind farm, located south of Midland and Odessa, has been in service since 1999, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data. West Texas Wind Energy Partners is the project operator, and a power purchase agreement with American Electric Power Co. Inc. unit AEP Energy Partners Inc. for the project's output expires in August, according to the data.

NextEra will decommission the wind farm Nov. 15, according to the ERCOT notification. Neither NextEra nor AEP responded to requests for comment on May 28.

ERCOT officials are warning they may have to declare energy emergency alerts in the summer, with low margins between power supply and demand. The ERCOT grid contains roughly 22,048 MW of wind capacity, according to its latest assessment of summer capacities. According to ERCOT, five wind projects totaling 1,650 MW were canceled in April, the last month in which cancellation data was available. About 5,656 MW of additional wind generation capacity are in the interconnection queue, according to ERCOT records.

NextEra subsidiary NextEra Energy Resources LLC recently canceled two wind projects totaling 470 MW in Oklahoma because of airspace concerns.
