Wind turbine causes brush fire in Erath County Monday

The failure appears to have involved one of the Vestas V110-2.2 turbines at the Silver Star 60 megawatt facility. Silver Star was first comissioned in 2008 using Clipper turbines. The Clipper turbines were replaced with Vestas turbines sometime after 2019.

Just before 2 p.m. on Monday, May 30, local firefighters were dispatched to a fire on County Road 397, northeast of Desdemona in Erath County where a fire was reported on the Windmill Farm in the area.
Upon arrival, volunteers from the Lingleville VFD reported the fire was near CR 497 and went to work putting out the blaze near a malfunctioning windmill. According to fire officials, one of the mills was experiencing issues and malfunctioned, causing it to lose oil and parts as well as spark, which caused the vegetation near the base of the windmill to ignite.
Lingleville VFD was able to get the fire out quickly and the damage was contained to the single malfunctioning windmill.
