Three days after the disaster of a wind turbine near Leisnig in Central Saxony, a technical defect has been found as the cause of the accident. After completion of the investigation it was clear that one of three rotor blades was broken, Hans Körner, managing director of the maintenance company Rasmus GmbH told the German press agency on Friday.

This led to a chain reaction where the wind turbine was bent down at a height of about 15 meters and crashed onto the field. Due to the impact the gearbox is imbedded about two meters into the ground.

The clean-up is underway. By Monday and Tuesday, the almost 100 meter high wind turbine will be dismantled and removed with heavy equipment. "There will be nothing more to see by January 3," Körner said. Small parts such as sharp-edged glass fiber pieces of the rotor blades had already been cleared. The inspection of the gearbox showed that no oil escaped.

According to the operating company Euro Wind Energy GmbH, the turbine will be temporarily stored before the planned scrapping in order to conduct any insurance assessments. Benjamin Schmitt, Branch Manager, estimated the economic damage of the accident at around half a million euros.

This sum included the possible loss of revenues from wind energy. According to dpa information, the full feed-in tariff would still have been paid for the damaged wind turbine until 31 December 2019.

At the same place, an identical wind turbine is to be installed in the wind farm. "This is an option," Schmitt said. From the point of view of the maintenance company no new authorization is required. "This is a repair", stated their managing director Körner.

The overturned turbine was first erected back to 1999. The most recent maintenance in June had, according to the Rasmus GmbH found no safety deficiencies.

According to Eurowind Energy GmbH, which has been operating three more plants in this park for around two years, and around 300 nationwide, the wind turbines are in the so-called repowering phase. They are to be replaced by modern systems. According to Schmitt, the building permit has already been applied for, but is not yet available. "This will continue for a while." (Dpa)
