Its operator hopes to file an application with the Ohio Power Siting Board early this summer and begin construction by the end of the year. Commercial operations would then begin in the summer or fall of 2014. Construction would have to begin this year for the operator to take advantage of a federal tax credit, unless it is renewed for next year.

GREENWICH - A public informational meeting is scheduled for Wednesday night to detail plans for a proposed wind farm in north central Ohio.

The company 6011 Greenwich Windpark, LLC, a subsidiary of Windlab Developments USA, Ltd., wants to build a 25-turbine wind farm on 4,600 acres of leased land in Huron County's Greenwich Township, bordering Richland County.

The open meeting will occur from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at South Central High School, 3305 Greenwich Angling Road in Greenwich. Company representatives will be present to answer questions and address concerns from the public.

The proposed wind farm eventually would have a generating capacity of 60 megawatts. The project would include associated infrastructure such as access roads, an electrical collector system, operations maintenance facilities and a substation.

The Greenwich wind farm would be the third such planned facility in the region.

The largest, the proposed Black Fork Wind Farm in Crawford and Richland counties near the village of Tiro, would be the largest, with 91 wind turbines spread over 24,200 acres.

That project remains tied up in the Ohio Supreme Court's appeals process. Opponents of the project have claimed inadequate financial protection if the turbines are decommissioned, and that no record exists of how much it would cost to remove decommissioned turbines.

Portions of the opponents' appeal were dismissed in a ruling in March, but other portions of the case remain unresolved.

Another wind farm proposed for northeastern Morrow County has yet to be submitted for approval by the Ohio Power Siting Board, according to agency spokesman Steve Irwin. That project would be operated by Invenergy LLC, of Chicago.

Meanwhile, yet another wind energy project, the Republic Wind Farm, is in pre-application status at the siting board. To be operated by Nordex USA Inc., also of Chicago, the project would include 83 turbines on 15,000 acres near Republic in Seneca and Sandusky counties.

State law requires 25 percent of electricity sold in Ohio must be generated from alternative energy sources by 2025. At least half of this energy must come from renewable energy sources, including wind, and one half of the renewable facilities must be located in the state.
