MALONE, N.Y. (AP) - Residents of a northern New York town have a message for wind-farm developers: Not in my back yard.
The town council in Malone, near the Canadian border in Franklin County, have adopted a local law that tightly restricts the construction of wind towers. The law passed unanimously yesterday limits tower heights to 85 feet on non-agricultural land and 100 feet for property within an agricultural district as long as the power generated is used on-site.
No wind energy companies have proposed a project in Malone, but there are plans under way in several sites in neighboring Clinton County.
Wind-farm opponents say the projects hurt property values.
Lewis County -- also in the North Country -- already has 120 wind towers that are part of a nearly 200-tower wind farm planned in the town of Lowville.
