Public information sessions on wind power
Watertown Daily Times|Cindy Grant|October 2, 2008
The public information program that was held at the Thousand Islands Central School on Sept. 25 was attended by Jefferson County residents who wanted to learn more about industrial wind turbines. The program was put together by a group of citizens from the Cape Vincent, Clayton, Orleans, Lyme and Brownville areas who saw a need for a program like this. ...The public needs to be informed of how our quality of life would be affected and reminded that we are not in an Empire Zone so the profits here would not be close to what was gained in Lewis County.

During the presentation many individuals, including residents from Hammond, Theresa and Pamelia, stopped at the information tables to ask questions, look at maps showing possible tower locations and to pick up free information packets. The Voters for Wind organization was invited and was provided with a table to hand out its own information. They were also invited to select their own pro-wind speaker to represent them during the information program. They chose Steven Sullivan, a consultant to BP Alternative Energy. Also speaking was John Droz, a scientist and environmental activist, and Paul Carr, an engineering professor and founder of Bernier, Carr & Associates.
We were very happy that citizens from at least eight townships came to hear and gather information. Everyone should come hear the facts of what industrial wind development is all about - both the pros and the cons. Once these 406-foot industrial wind turbines are installed, they will probably never be taken down in your life or mine, so we need to know all the facts to make sure we make the right decisions. These public information nights are a great opportunity to gather a lot of different viewpoints in one evening.
The giant foreign-owned industrial wind companies are looking at installing 400-foot-plus towers in towns throughout Jefferson County and beyond. The public needs to be informed of how our quality of life would be affected and reminded that we are not in an Empire Zone so the profits here would not be close to what was gained in Lewis County.
There was a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, in the town of Orleans office on Sunrise Avenue in LaFargeville for two more industrial wind turbine test towers. One is planned for Route 181, and the other one is on County Route 15. We will also be hosting another free information session on Tuesday, Oct. 14, from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Lyme Central School, and everyone from all townships is invited.
