Georgian Bay, wind and beauty

Yet the Ontario Government seems to be committed to opening up this sensitive area to the burgeoning wind-farm industry. In a recent report commissioned by the Ontario Power Authority, Georgian Bay has been singled out as an excellent place to locate offshore wind farms. A number of land-based farms have already been proposed along its shoreline.

Honour And Protect (July 12), your editorial about World Heritage Sites, is very timely. Here in Ontario we have a number of sites which have been singled out by UNESCO as being world-class in their natural beauty, their ecology and cultural significance. One of these is Georgian Bay. A few years ago, through the efforts of the Georgian Bay Association and others, it was designated as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. It has been described as the most beautiful freshwater archipelago in the world.

Yet the Ontario Government seems to be committed to opening up this sensitive area to the burgeoning wind-farm industry. There are many locations in Ontario that are equally suitable for wind farms, which are closer to market with established transmission lines while not threatening a UNESCO Reserve.
