MP backs wind farm protests

A politician is pledging his support to a group opposing a proposed wind farm.

David Heathcoat-Amory, the MP who represents Brent Knoll and Burnham, is planning to meet members of kNOll To Wind Farm, an action group based in the village, to discuss the site at Inner Farm, Burnham.

Green firm Ecotricity is due to submit its planning application to turn the site into a wind farm in the near future.

Mr Heathcoat-Amory said: "In view of the likely planning application for a wind farm near Brent Knoll, I am visiting the site this month to assess the impact on the village and local residents.

"Planning is a matter for the local authority but in this case the application is driven by a Government energy policy that subsidises wind power."

kNOll To Wind Farm has also been saying this week that it is not competing with another action group set up in the area.

Families For Clean Energy (FORCE) was launched recently to promote clean energy, including wind power. It is based in Burnham but is trying to gain support from along the Somerset coast.

Spokesman for kNOll To Wind Farm, Andrew Manning, said: "We believe that it is quite possible to support wind power in Somerset or elsewhere but object to the proposals for a wind farm between Burnham and Brent Knoll.

"Each proposal needs to be assessed on its own merits. We are not in competition with anyone."
