Wind damages turbines near Minco

Ok-blade-failure1_thumb MINCO, Okla. — A wind turbine near Minco was damaged in overnight storms. Part of one of the blades was broken off and was left dangling in the breeze Friday morning. Some debris landed on part of land owned by Fox 25 Storm Tracker Bobby Hines, Hines said. The Oklahoma Mesonet site in Minco saw a gust of nearly 60 miles an hour during those thunderstorms. Other damage was reported around Oklahoma in the form of downed tree limbs.

The Independence Turbine in Kingston has been shut down due to mechanical problems

“We lease the land to them and have a power purchase agreement,” Bott said. “They’re paying us lease payments, and we're getting some tax on the personal property.” The town’s agreement doesn’t make allowances for shutdowns, however, so KWI is on the hook for paying Kingston regardless of whether the blades are spinning, he added.

Out-of-control wind turbine ‘shook itself apart’ in Huron County

The turbine exceeded designed rotation speeds — 14.4 rpm (revolutions per minute) -- and at that speed, blade tips are moving at about 200 mph, according to Exelon. It created an imbalance as blades picked up speed. At the time of collapse, rotation speeds reached 18 rpm, officials said. “At that high of an rpm, the thing just basically shook itself apart.”
