Europe’s climate lesson for America

Europe is showing the folly of trying to purge CO2 from the economy. No matter how heavily subsidized, renewables can’t replace fossil fuels in a modern economy. Households and businesses get stuck with higher energy bills even as CO2 emissions increase. Europe’s problems are a warning to the U.S., if only Democrats would heed it..

Iberdrola warns of ‘protectionist’ risk to US offshore wind sector

The US Department of Energy said in its latest offshore wind market report that initial Atlantic coast projects were expected “to rely heavily on international supply chains for major components, installation vessels and engineering design work”. White said the industry had already surpassed all expectations in reducing its costs and a domestic supply chain would eventually flourish. But the industry needed time to develop.

World’s biggest battery sidelined after “overheating incident” in Californ

Another major problem has struck at a pioneering big battery project, this time at the 400MW/1600MWh Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility in California, south of San Francisco, which was recently expanded to become the world’s largest of its kind. The owner and operator of the big battery, Vistra Corp, says an investigation is underway into an “overheating incident” at the Moss Landing facility, which did not result in a fire, but has taken the 300MW, four hour storage first phase of the project out of service.

S.D. regulators reverse earlier ruling and add a residence to a wind farm’s second sound study

The rural Strandberg residence of Amber Christenson will be part of the Crowned Ridge I wind project’s second sound study after all this fall, the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission decided Tuesday. The 2-1 vote reversed a decision the commission had made last month, when Gary Hanson was the only one Christenson could persuade that her place should be included too.

'Siemens Gamesa infringed GE wind turbine grid technology patent', US judge says

A US judge has issued a preliminary ruling finding that Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) infringed a General Electric (GE) patent for low-voltage ride-through technology (LVRT) that keeps wind turbines connected to the grid. However, the judge rejected a similar intellectual property (IP) claim concerning GE’s zero-voltage ride-through (ZVRT) technology.

Missouri’s largest wind farm is idle at night for fear of killing endangered animals

“To be clear, the High Prairie Wind Farm has been curtailed from before dusk to after dawn since April 19, 2021,” Geoff Marke, chief economist for the Missouri Office of the Public Counsel said in sworn testimony filed last week with the Missouri Public Service Commission. Ameren halted night operations for several weeks this spring after four bats, which are nocturnal, and 52 birds, including a bald eagle, were discovered dead on the property, according to a report submitted to federal wildlife officials.

Wisconsin regulators pass on policy changes, order further study of clean energy transition

Commissioner Ellen Nowak, the commission’s lone Republican appointee, questioned the premise of the investigation, dubbed the “Roadmap to Zero Carbon.” “Operating the grid with zero carbon as we know it now is a dangerous thing,” she said. “A roadmap to zero carbon is the wrong road to go down. I think we need to go down a road to cleaner energy.” ...“We don’t have a plan to get to literal zero carbon by 2050,” said Commissioner Tyler Huebner. “But we don’t need to solve that today.”

I-95 wind turbine zoning proposal met with criticism

A proposal under review by the City Council and the Planning Board seeks to amend zoning to allow for wind turbines along the old Interstate 95 access road, but many residents have come out strongly against the idea. The ordinance, sponsored by Councilor at-Large Barry Connell, was introduced to the council on June 28 and referred to the Committee on Planning & Development for further discussion. “I think that we have a responsibility to look for ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the city of Newburyport to the extent that is possible,” Connell said in a phone interview Thursday.

Fisherman catches device to monitor fish for wind-farm study

Warner said he notified the Coast Guard of the devices and said he was told they were unaware of them. A Coast Guard spokesman didn’t immediately respond. DEC spokeswoman Maureen Wren said the agency requires no permits to place the devices in the water. DEC did approve a permit for Stony Brook and Cornell to "collect and possess" fish to be surgically tagged as part of the study, but the DEC was "not involved in the scheduling of the deployment of the arrays," spokeswoman Lori Severino said.

Equinor considers driving huge pilings into LI seabed for wind turbines

Equinor had been considerably more certain about its foundation plans at conferences and presentations since winning the award in a ceremony with former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo in 2019. At an offshore wind-power conference at the SUNY Maritime College later that year, gravity-base foundations were the only option discussed. The presentation included artists’ renderings of ships towing the foundations down the Hudson. In its recent construction plan filed with the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Equinor has excluded gravity-base concrete foundations for use with an offshore substation that sits among the turbines, noting the "operational challenges" associated with boat landing and "accommodation of the crew transfer vessel."
