Despite PTC extension, turbulence still prevalent in U.S. wind market

"We are reacting to the weakened demand from the U.S. market, brought on by the unpredictable extensions of the PTC, and the resulting low utilization rate of our U.S. assembly plant," said Dr. Jürgen Zeschky, CEO of Nordex SE, in a statement. Without Canadian or South American orders back-stopping production, there was no business case for Nordex to keep its U.S. facility going.

Antrim Wind Energy, town reach agreement, again

Residents took the selectmen to court earlier this year challenging the PILOT agreement on the grounds it was crafted at illegal non-public hearings. ...The tax agreement would cut the potential tax revenue by approximately half, but raise the town's assessed value. In a town with a cooperative school district partially based on the town's assessed value, it could end up costing the town more, Allen has argued.

Finance Committee asks senators to start tax reform process

Rather than having senators identify the tax breaks they want to eliminate, Senators Baucus and Hatch decided it would be politically easier to ask which breaks should be saved. But they said saving tax breaks come at a cost: every $2 trillion in individual tax breaks added back to their "blank slate" would raise tax rates 1.3 to 2.2 percentage points. ...senators must decide between popular tax breaks and low income tax rates.

Taxpayers are forced to subsidize wind power

Two-thirds of the cost of wind development is paid for by taxpayers. New subsidized power from remote states will be paid for by the ratepayer/taxpayer. Congress has called for the phaseout of wind subsidies. When that happens, the new transmission lines surely will be the next "bridge to nowhere." Happy Global Wind Day.

America should learn from Europe on wind power

Germany and Spain are waking up to the inevitable truth about renewable energy, especially offshore wind. They are now realizing the projects cannot survive without subsidies and that they make energy much more expensive to households and businesses. In an age of austerity, they are a luxury even Germany, Europe's economic powerhouse, cannot fully afford any more.

Revised PILOT agreement on the table

After Hillsborough County Superior Court Judge David Garfunkel ruled that the town's original PILOT, or payment in lieu of taxes, agreement with Antrim Wind Energy for a proposed wind farm is null and void on May 20, town officials met with members of Antrim Wind Monday night to discuss terms for a revised PILOT, which was drafted by the wind developer.

Gov. Heineman: Wait on wind power legislation

"I've made it very clear that Nebraskans deserve tax relief first ... before you ought to be considering a bill like that, and especially providing special tax breaks for a Kansas company so they can ship Nebraska energy" out of state, Heineman said during a conference call with reporters. "You ought to ask him why that makes sense."

Dank said the wind tax credits, among the most costly issued by state government, benefit some companies that are selling the power they generate to other states. "The Oklahoma taxpayers are being asked to subsidize electric customers in Tennessee and Alabama," he said.
