What to do with all that wind?

What we have here are miles and miles of visual pollution. Those who imagined that a wind farm would consist of a half dozen or so wind turbines scattered about in the boonies should take the drive. By some estimates, the hundreds of wind turbines produce enough energy to power a city of 250,000. Imagine what it would have to look like to power a city of 3 million.

Now you see them, now you don't

Natrona County has only 11 of the 770 wind turbines in Wyoming, but their close proximity to Casper makes them a distinctive feature (they are impossible to miss), and probably will be for decades to come. Yet neither the county or Casper have any specific visual guidelines in their planning regulations concerning wind towers.

Sound, shadow standards scare wind developers

Environmental consultants can count the minutes a home is affected by the strobelike flickers of a wind turbine's shadow. They can measure the decibels of the rhythmic thrum of turbine blades cutting through the air. ...But, wind farm developers argue, basing placement on those tests means sacrificing the one thing the industry needs to build in Wisconsin: certainty.

No future in industrial wind

No matter how much or how little generation we have, industrial scale wind turbines will never make a difference. They are unpredictably intermittent and there has been no circumstance where building wind plants has resulted in the decommissioning of an existing fossil fuel facility. Industrial wind projects divide communities, lower property values, will harm Vermonters' health, wildlife, tourist and second-home economy, and kill birds and endangered bats.

Lake windmill project spurs debate among lawmakers

Now that the Power Authority has received five proposals from developers willing to build the 166 windmills off the shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario or both, some county lawmakers from lakeshore districts are saying, not so fast. "I support the resolution we set up supporting the project, but we need to pay attention to the environmentals," said Legislator John Syracuse, R-Newfane. "We've got a sensitive resource there."

Didn't we already save the Steens from wind farms?

Ten years ago Congress protected Steens Mountain to, in essence, keep it the way it is. In collaboration with ranchers and conservationists, Oregon's congressional delegation teamed up with then Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt and then-Gov. John Kitzhaber to secure passage of the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act of 2000 ...wind developers have recently enticed some private landowners on Steens who will profit by the new "green gold rush".

Environmental concerns ignored in Orangeville

Many residents of Orangeville are concerned for the future of their properties. The article written by Matt Gryta does not however comment on the concerns our residents have for their homes and families. It is well documented in other wind turbine farms, such as Cohocton, that the land and environment suffer hazard brought by turbine construction in a community. Turbines are significantly detrimental to the avian wildlife in our area.

Wind farms stir debate on their value

According to an ongoing survey conducted by 13 members of the Informed Farmers, 85 percent of landowners surveyed oppose the wind farm. So far they have spoken with 68 landowners possessing approximately 26,500 acres in the proposed wind farm area who oppose the project and only 10 landowners possessing approximately 2,200 acres who support the Green River Wind Farm and have signed on.

Reversing the turbines on Maine's mountains

If using a huge amount of real estate to generate a tiny amount of energy from an intermittent energy source sounds deranged, consider, too, that we haven't yet found the Holy Grail for storing wind-generated energy. Wind is either an instant energy snack or a famine. It must be used when it's there or immediately replaced when it isn't." Yikes.

Renewable footprints: Ocotillo is Ground Zero for green developments

The open, wind-swept terrain here makes it an ideal area for Imperial County's renewable energy projects, but residents have varying views about the modern development. ...District 2 county Supervisor Jack Terrazas' jurisdiction includes Ocotillo. "What we have to weigh is what is most beneficial for everyone," he said. "At the same time, we're faced with mandates from a government edict that mandates the use of more green energy."

Some Ocotillo residents angry with development, say it will spoil the desert

"We all hate to see the desert disappear for sure, but we sure need the jobs here," he said. If everything were to go in as proposed, the scenery will be drastically different, said county Supervisor Jack Terrazas, who represents the area on the Board of Supervisors. There are a lot of projects that want to locate near Ocotillo.

Blowing in the wind

Waitsfield voters may be asked to make a decision about changing the Town Plan before Citizens' Energy has completed its environmental studies, and that would be wrong. The environmental studies for this project need to come first before any changes to the Town Plan are made.

Wind power or hot air?; Don't sacrifice WNC's ridges to industrial greed

At a November forum on wind power at UNCA, a young staffer from a regional activist group puffed that he had dedicated his life to fighting mountaintop-removal coal mining, blustering that he wasn't about to let "these NIMBYs" who oppose industrializing Western North Carolina's ridge tops stand in his way. I share his anger over mountaintop-removal mining, but as a renewable-energy advocate I find his passion for utility-scale wind power in WNC sorely misplaced - and painfully ironic.

Moon Island wind turbine proposal draws questions from residents

More than 75 Quincy residents gathered at Squantum Elementary School on Monday to question officials about a wind turbine ..."I'm a total believer in wind power, but at what point does solving one environmental issue create another?" said Steve Kolander of Squantum, adding he would prefer several smaller turbines with less of a visual impact on the island.

Wind turbine foes press Brown County to ask Wisconsin for further studies

The citizens group contesting the proposed locations of wind turbines in southern Brown County has asked county officials to take an active role in convincing the state to further study the health and safety impact. In more than two hours of presentations before a joint meeting of the county's Human Services Committee and Board of Health, group members cited sleep disorders, physical danger and well contamination among their reasons.

Building a virtual wind farm

Hecklau says that the early land-based wind farms were "warmly received," by the public, but controversy has dogged each successive project, especially in the Northeast. Nowadays, there's "not an easy project anymore in the Northeast. Every project, some opposition." Projects in the Midwest, he says, receive much less opposition.
