Wind energy — is it worth it?

If the commissioners give in to Apex Clean Energy’s request, the commissioners will be providing excessive upfront tax relief to a project Apex’s own spokesperson said will not affect the project moving forward. Wind companies and wind project get bought and sold all the time, and in my opinion the risk is too great. I have heard from many of you personally and at my recent office hours in Norwalk. I am moved by your pleas and will work to move Ohio forward to ensure our children and our grandchildren have the opportunity to view our county’s picturesque countryside as God intended. I encourage the commissioners to vote no on a PILOT.

Residents' questions left unanswered after informational wind farm dinner

Landowners drafted a list of 88 questions for the company about the potential impact of the wind farm on their land, their livestock, their crops and their property values during a Saturday meeting.  ...The meeting was less than satisfactory, and people were not very happy, Ernst said. “I don’t feel like we got some questions answered that needed to be answered.”

Unalaska City Council mulls windmills

Two gigantic windmills with blades the length of a football field, and maybe a field goal to boot, are in the planning stages for Unalaska, according to a local contractor and a former city engineer, who described the project to the Unalaska City Council last month.

Apex Energy plans to bring 33 turbines to Orleans County

After concern arose from community members, Apex responded by cutting the number of turbines in half. But to do that without the rolling hills that help windfarms like the one in Wyoming County, Apex proposed building the tallest windmills the land can hold. The top of the blade span would rise beyond 650 feet.

Naked in the wind

In the eyes of a lawyer, which is not very romantic, when a wind farm contains steel, wires, underground cabling, electrical components and concrete we have potential legal liability.  Wind farm infrastructure is not owned by the landowner.  It is owned by the wind farm operator.  A landowner has no right to control or interfere with a wind farm. Who may be liable and to what extent is always an interesting legal question.  A court calls this the allocation of liability.  It is best not to become involved in a question on the allocation of liability.  General liability insurance coverage is one way in which liability risks are reduced.

Roaring Brook public hearing airs concerns about project changes

The Land Trust believes Roaring Brook will have a negative impact on water quality, fishing, and recreation in general in the most untouched center, or core, of the Tug Hill forest, Mr. Quinn also raised questions about the specific impact the project will have on the new Tug Hill Traverse Trail. The trail is designed to go across the plateau and be the longest continuous hiking trail outside of the Adirondack Park in the state.

New public meeting ordered for wind farm

The developers of a proposed local wind farm must re-do a public meeting as part of the approval process it must undergo before it gets a permit to build. The Ohio Power Siting Board decided Thursday that Apex Clean Energy needed to host another public information meeting for its Emerson Creek Wind Project, which would see the construction of about 70 wind turbines in Erie and Huron counties.

Extreme cold shuts down North Dakota wind farms, energizing debate on their reliability

Turbines across North Dakota shut down at times in the last week of January due to some of the coldest temperatures the area had seen since the mid-1990s. Wind power levels dropped significantly, more than experts anticipated. Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., and others seized on the mid-winter lapse in wind power to criticize the Green New Deal, a policy proposal to reduce carbon emissions and address climate change. Cramer called the proposal "a fantasy." ...“What it did in my mind is it exposed a real vulnerability that we’ve often talked about over the years … of intermittent electric generation,” he said of the turbines shutting down.

Harrisburg residents question wind farm's potential effects on taxes, noise

Ryan Lidholm, a real estate agent with Weichert, Realtors, said the project might have an impact on property values. Lindholm recounted a home sale where the buyer backed out after learning of the potential wind farm. The uncertainty of the project made the buyer nervous, Lindholm said. “There were so many unknowns,” Lidholm said. “She wasn’t sure she wanted to build her dream home in Harrisburg.”

A look at the main issues causing friction between some Spotsy residents and a proposed solar facility

A consultant for the county determined there “is no heat island,” but believes temporary heat spikes could happen with the Spotsylvania facility. That finding led staff and the Planning Commission to recommend 350-foot setbacks between solar equipment and property lines. Staff recommends these setbacks only for properties with houses, while the Planning Commission recommended them for the entire property. SPower says those setbacks would negatively impact the project plans. The company is seeking 100-foot setbacks from property lines and 350-foot setbacks from homes.

Controversial wind turbine back on town’s radar

At 462.5 feet, the proposed wind turbine is about 430 feet taller than the maximum 35-foot height currently allowed by the town zoning ordinance, so the developer will have to seek a dimensional variance in order to move forward to the next stage of the application. The developer also needs a special use permit to construct a wind turbine in a residential agricultural district.

Board will decide fate of windmill farm

Opponents of a local wind farm won a major victory this week with the Erie County commissioners, but who wins the war on wind turbines will be decided in Columbus. The Erie County commissioners voted to deny the payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) requested by Apex Clean Energy for its Emerson Creek Project.

About 25 percent of region's energy fleet was unavailable during polar vortex

Wind speeds were less than forecast on those days, meaning power production was less than expected. Ice on turbines hampered wind production. ...Wind turbines are often programmed to shut down when the thermometer is 20 below to 25 below because equipment can be damaged if turbines continue running. Xcel receives 21 percent of its generation from wind in Minnesota and the Dakotas, and its turbines automatically shut down around 20 below. They were generally down during the nights of Jan. 29 and 30.
