Letter: Indefinite suspension of Great Bay Wind Energy Center investment

Great-bay-wind-letter-to-county_thumb Pioneer Green Energy has been promoting a 25-turbine wind energy facility (599-feet tall each) to be sited in Somerset County, Maryland, across the Chesapeake Bay from the Pax River naval base in an area surrounded by dozens of active bald eagle nests. Significant objections to the project were raised by the Navy and local residents. The Maryland State Senate and Assembly voted overwhelmingly to delay the project until more information could be determined about the impacts on military radar. Objections were also raised by members of Maryland's Congressional delegation. On March 20, 2015, Pioneer Green notified the Somerset County Commissioners that the project was being placed on indefinite suspension. U.S. Average Annual Capacity factors by project and State

Us-windmap(1)_thumb This spreadsheet shows production data for the Energy Information Administration sample of wind projects in the US, by State, for the years 2011 and 2012. Average annual capacity factors by project, State, and for the United States were determined after knowing the installed capacity for each project. The spreadsheet has three tabs with the first showing a summary of the two years. Note: EIA changes its sampling of projects by year which is why the lists from one year to the next differ. A composite map of the U.S. with the capacity factors shown can be found here .

PMLD admits wind facility is losing money, raising rates

Generalmanagerletterratepayers_thumb This letter written by Princeton Municipal Light Department's (PMLD) General Manager, Brian Allen, offers a candid assessment of the utility's two-turbine (3.0 MW) project. The turbines have failed to live up to expected production levels. The project has also been plagued by technical problems. Rather than reducing rates for customers, the project lost $1.875 million and will continue to lose $600,000 yearly under current circumstances. Excerpts of the letter are provided below.
