It's town meeting season. Around Newfound Lake Several towns are contemplating non-binding resolutions to take the pulse of voters on the question of wind-farms. The votes show strong sentiment against more wind-farms in the area, and scant support.

Falmouth turbine takedown costs remain up in air

Town officials are unsure whether Falmouth will have to pay back nearly $5 million in federal stimulus funds that the town received in 2010 to construct the Wind 2 turbine. When taking into account the debt amassed by the two turbines, the cost of removing them and service contract is between about $12.3 and $15.2 million.

Saugus turbine contract in jeopardy

The Water and Sewer Commission is poised to yank a $1.8 million contract from a Saugus firm over claims that KGCI Inc. has not paid a vendor assembling the commission's 254-foot-tall wind turbine tower. "The contractor obviously has a cash flow problem," said commission attorney Samuel Vitali.

Wind farm proposal loses in Grafton voting

The incumbent selectman was ousted and a wind farm project got the thumbs down from voters Tuesday. Almost 60 percent, of the registered voters turned out. An article asking voters "to advise the Selectmen to REJECT the proposed Wild Meadow Wind Project" passed 334 to 190.

Feds approve 3 major renewable energy projects in West

The approvals were for two solar and one wind projects, including NextEra Energy Inc's 750-megawatt McCoy Solar Energy Project in Southern California, the 150-megawatt Desert Harvest Solar Farm proposed by EDF Renewable Energy, also in Riverside County, and the 200-megawatt Searchlight Wind Energy Project in Nevada, south of Las Vegas. Searchlight, which is being developed by Duke Energy Corp, will use Siemens wind turbines.

Maine Supreme Court invalidates permit for Saddleback Ridge Wind Project

The rule amendment did not become effective, however, until June 10, 2012, when it received the required legislative approval. The Board’s February 18, 2012 appeal decision affirmed the Department’s initial decision to apply the 45 dBA limit to the Saddleback Ridge Wind Project. This proved critical to the Law Court because the Project’s applications, while presenting evidence that the Project complied with the 45 dBA limit, presented no evidence that the Project would comply with the 42 dBA limit.

Holland BPW approves 16.8MW wind contract

The power purchase agreement with the MPPA for 16.8 MW of wind generation will start out at less than 4.5 cents per kwh and escalate at 2.5 percent per year over the course of 20 years. The HBPW anticipates Holland will start receiving energy through this contract by August 2014.

Acciona to lay off near half of factory

Monday marked the second major round of layoffs at the West Branch facility in its six-year history. In 2009, Acciona laid off 58 employees, which was a third of its West Branch workforce. At the time, company officials called it a "short-term issue" due to the sluggish economy, but most or all of those positions never came back.

Elusive offshore wind pilot moves closer to go/no-go decision

By the end of June, the state may decide if an offshore wind farm will be built about three miles from Atlantic City's beaches. In an order signed last Thursday, the New Jersey Board of Utilities established a procedural schedule, saying it expects to take action on the proposal by June 30 -- an application that has been pending before the regulatory agency since May 2011.

Mass. co says no deal with Cape Wind

Horstmann said in an interview Friday at this Middleborough company that he feels his company was "used" to win public support for the controversial project he was once confident would boost local jobs. ...Cape Wind spokesman Mark Rodgers said Monday that Mass Tank just didn't have the experience or resources for the job.
