Fishing groups seek Atlantic wind farm delay

The petition, filed Thursday in federal court in Washington, D.C., said the plan to build as many as 194 turbines in a 127-square-mile section would hurt fishermen who now cruise the area looking for scallops and squid and others who harvest fish species including summer flounder, mackerel, black sea bass and monkfish.

Fishermen hit feds with lawsuit over wind lease sale

The filing alleges that the leasing process for BOEM did not adequately consider the impact the proposed New York Wind Energy Area would have on the region’s fishermen. According to the FSF, the site is in the waters of the New York Bight on vital, documented scallop and squid fishing grounds, which serve as essential fish habitat and grounds for other commercially important species, including black sea bass and summer flounder.

Long Island to get offshore wind farm

The power produced by the project would cost far more than electricity generated by conventional gas-powered plant, officials said. But on Thursday both the authority and Deepwater declined to provide cost estimates. Because of falling costs in the industry, the cost of the electricity sold to the authority would be less than the 16 to 17 cents per kilowatt-hour ...but retail residential rates on Long Island are about half that.

As turbine effort secures financing, conservationists speak out

The project was technically feasible, but the energy output from the turbines — 120 to 500 megawatts — would have cost two to four times more than land-based wind, according to a NYPA news release. The NYPA said annual subsidies of between $60 million and $100 million would result in high costs to the New York Power Authority. Great Lakes Wind Truth and NA-PAW were outspoken against the GLOW project, with hundreds of residents in the town of Greece, N.Y., signing a petition against it.
