A challenge has been brought over An Bord Pleanála’s refusal to grant planning permission for a connector linking a wind farm in Co Monaghan to the national power grid. The action is by Coolberrin Wind Farm Ltd, a subsidiary of Energia Group, which wants to develop a seven-turbine wind farm and associated connector.

Mr Sweetman is seeking an order quashing a decision of An Bord Pleanala in December 2018 that the construction of the connections servicing a windfarm development located at Ballycumber, Tinahealy, Co Wicklow was exempted development. The central issue concerns his the claim that the works undertaken for the purpose of connecting the Ballycumber Wind Farm to the national electricity grid should have been subject to an environmental impact assessment.
A total of 16 wind energy projects – with full planning permission and grid connection offers – “are at medium or high risk of not being built” ...The problem is arising because connection dates project developers have been offered are all for late 2019, according to IWEA chief executive Dr David Connolly. To qualify for renewable energy feed-in tariff (REFIT) schemes, they need to be built, connected and exporting electricity by March 31st, 2020.
