The strange case of the climate scientists fighting a wind farm

The island is a special protection area, meaning it was selected by the ecological network of NATURA and its birds directive to protect one or more rare, threatened, or vulnerable bird species or specific regularly occurring migratory species. A report the HOS published in March 2020 found that erecting wind turbines will have detrimental consequences for Antikythera’s biodiversity. Among the impacts, the group found that fatigued birds reaching the island after having crossed the Mediterranean could be killed by the wind turbines or avoid the island altogether and eventually die from exhaustion further out to sea.

Ocean life is at risk from turbines: Ramping up wind power off British coast will cause loss of marine life by 'urbanising the sea', experts warn

Melanie Austen, Professor of Ocean and Society at Plymouth University, said: ‘We’re talking about effectively urbanising the sea by introducing these structures. Introducing hard structure through cables and the turbines themselves is going to change the ecology and the ecosystem.’

Failure for wind industry: ECJ strengthens bird protection

"The judgment does not help us as an industry," said Wolfram Axthelm managing director of the German Wind Energy Association (BWE) to the Handelsblatt. The challenge remains of balancing the protection of the individual birds and the protection of the population. The ball is now with the legislature in Germany. "The Environment Ministers' Conference has taken up the topic and must now come to results as quickly as possible," said Axthelm.

Offshore wind plans will drive up electricity prices and require ‘massive industrialization of the oceans’

“Environmentalists have not yet grasped the massive industrialization of the oceans now underway and proposed.” ...If the advisors on Biden’s climate team are serious about protecting the environment, now would be a good time for them to reconsider the massive industrialization of the oceans that is now underway. It might even make them think about preventing America’s existing fleet of nuclear reactors from being prematurely shuttered.

'Beastly' windmill project that 'will endanger animal lives and the environment' is universally slammed on Spain’s Costa Blanca

Benissa councillor, Mari Carme Ronda, claims the 82-metre blades would be a threat to species of birds such as the Golden Eagle, the Peregrine Falcon and the Osprey. After discovering the plan on Wednesday, she said the windmills (each as high as a 30-storey building) would have ‘a beastly environmental and landscape impact.’

"Killer" wind turbines near Nozay: in the Pumpkin farm, the 400th cow died in mid-December

For Didier and Murielle Potiron, but also for their neighbor breeder Céline Bouvet , the origin of this excess mortality of their animals is clearly linked to the nearby wind turbines. All the more so as they themselves have suffered the effects on their health for all these years: permanent fatigue, muscle pain, headaches, insomnia … so many problems that disappear as soon as they move away from their farms / homes.

Protect marine life from WWII bomb detonations on wind farm sites, urges Joanna Lumley

Ms Lumley and marine conservation groups fear that more whales and dolphins could be harmed after Boris Johnson promised to ramp up the UK’s offshore wind capacity and are calling for less harmful methods to be used. There is limited data on the impact of exploding ordnance in the sea, but a 2015 study on one area of the North Sea suggested 88 explosions had “very likely” caused permanent hearing loss in 1,280 Harbour Porpoises.

Matasejún claims against seven wind farms

The promoting company affirms that the environmental impact does not exist and the landscape impact will be acceptable. In contrast, "we consider that both impacts will be significant for our town. The type of wind turbines to be installed requires a large volume of ground movement, which will impact habitat and birdlife. Matasejún would be surrounded on three of its four sides by wind turbines. The impact would create a significant increase in noise and light pollution. Turbine lighting would destroy the darkness of the area."

Bjerkreim Søndre wind facility

The Bjerkreim Søndre cluster in Norway is the result of a 15-year contract by Facebook to acquire the full output of the 294MW facility. The turbines are sited at/around latitude and longitude of 58.437781, 6.089634 which appears to be a highly complex terrain that includes an abundance of rock formations and water areas. The impact on the natural environment of these 70 Siemens SWT-DD-130-4.2 MW turbines each standing around 600-feet tall on the landscape is impossible to fully assess.

The Rape of Aphrodite

No one is opposed to the principle of Kythera being energy autonomous. The issue is whether to turn a pristine island into an industrial wind farm. The current proposals would permit at least 100 skyscraper- sized wind-generators to be built, which would be visible from every corner of the island. Four production licenses have already been granted for 60 wind turbines (which would produce a total of 150 MW of power), and another 60 towers are in the pipeline.
