Hearing to address met tower

MATTAPOISETT -- Although the tower anchors were hammered into the ground weeks ago, the town will hold a public hearing about its proposed met tower Monday.

A precursor to a wind turbine, the met tower is a skinny, 150-foot pole that measures wind speeds. If the tower measures speeds of at least 14.5 mph during its trial year, the town would be eligible to buy a wind turbine.

The public hearing, though, will address the met tower issues only, said Michael J. Botelho, town administrator. At the meeting, town officials plan to present information on the tower's construction, location and aesthetics.

Although they have not determined who will lead the presentation, the town has invited politicians and members of the Wind Power Study Committee.

The tower will be located in the Nasketucket State Park near Brandt Island Beach Road. Originally, the town planned to install the tower near Brandt Island Beach but chose the state park because it did not require the clearing of any land.

The town installed the tower's anchors weeks ago because they wanted to put them in before the ground froze, said Alice McGrath, chairwoman of the Wind Power Study Committee.

The public hearing will take place at 7 p.m. in the Center School cafeteria.
