ONU wind turbine blaze; Ada-Liberty Township Fire Department responses to early morning fire

Ada-Liberty Township Fire Department was called to a wind turbine fire reported at 4:31 a.m., Friday morning (March 26), according to the Ada police report.

The turbine at Klingler Road and County Road 50 is one of three on the Ohio Northern University campus. The three 400 KW turbines which were installed in 2011 are located less than 250-feet from the road and the university’s sports fields.

According to Northern Review @NorthernOnLine, Klingler Road and part of the “Green Monster” were temporarily blocked off as crews attempted to put out the blaze.

Witnesses reported winds at 70 mph. Each of the turbines were kept from spinning out of control using the turbine braking systems. It is believed that the turbine that caught fire experienced a failed braking system and the turbine spun rapidly until it ignited.

According to the police report (see below) seven vehicles responded to the fire, including one patrol car and an EMS vehicle. Photos of the burned turbine were taken by Doug DeNoi of Northern Review. The turbine was quickly dismantled and hauled away.
