The Maryland Energy Administration hopes the devices will support landowners who are interested in wind energy as an alternative energy source.

The state has six anemometers for the program, which will also provide education about wind energy development. The anemometers will be mounted atop towers and data collected will allow landowners to assess the economic feasibility of using wind energy.

James Madison University of Harrisonburg, Va. will administer the program in partnership with the state. James Madison has administered a similar program in Virginia since 2001 and is responsible for the tower installation, data collection and data processing.
