Wind turbine comes down during winter storm early Thursday morning

One of the wind turbines in the first commercial wind project to be done in Huron County came down this morning north-west of Elkton.

Brion Dickens, the Oliver Township Planning Commission Chairman told us the turbine is about a quarter mile from his house. It's turbine #6 of Harvest Wind #1, currently owned by Excelon-Continental and has been in service more than 7 years.

The turbine came down, leaving just part of the stack standing about 5 this morning in the area of Maxwell Road, between Berne and Richardson Roads.

Dickens told us he didn't hear anything when it came down and based on observations from neighbors he arrived at the time it occurred.

Officials from the company responded to the scene, to assess what happened and they closed off the access road to keep people away. Dickens said the turbine is in the middle of a field and caused no other damage.

Dickens who has expertise in wind turbines said the company will likely try to find out how the unit failed, and inspect the others in the wind park where components came from the same supplier.
