Pueblo police Cpt. Charlie Taylor said it's a miracle the crash wasn't much worse. "Just by pure luck no one was going the other way and no one was hurt," Taylor said.

PUEBLO, Colo. - A semi-truck hauling a trailer with a 75 ton wind tower crashed into a median on Interstate 25, forcing the Interstate to close for more than 10 hours by the Central Avenue exit.

Pueblo police Sgt. Howard Jackson said there was a mechanical failure that caused the trailer to break loose shortly before 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Rylee Williams said the sound of the crash frightened her as she was working at Larry Transmission Service near the scene of the crash.

"Well, our building is old and it shook the whole building and one of my workers was under a car and felt it. It was like an explosion," she said.

Pueblo police said the accident happened when a Vestas transport trailer heading northbound collided with a median and entered the southbound lanes.

Pueblo police Cpt. Charlie Taylor said it's a miracle the crash wasn't much worse.

"Just by pure luck no one was going the other way and no one was hurt," Taylor said.

Jackson said officers do not believe the driver was speeding, and added that it was not a Vestas employee, but a third party contractor, who was driving the truck.

Cars traveling north and south were being routed off of I-25 at Central Avenue and then being allowed to get back on the interstate using the Central Avenue on and off ramps.

Pueblo resident Chico Trujillo helped police divert traffic while officers and crews were clearing the mess.

"That's the way I am. I like to help out and trying to help keep the traffic flowing. I'm not part of the system, but it is a lot easier to help the officers out to keep it rolling without having another fender bender," he said.

Dozens of people gathered around I-25 as two cranes lifted the section of the wind tower onto a trailer.

"My God, I couldn't believe it," said Roy Keene with a chuckle as he watched near the Northern Avenue bridge.

"This is a relatively small city and so when things like this happen, everybody hears about it," said Beth McKinley.

Vestas provided KRDO with the following statement when asked about the crash:
