Construction of 82 wind turbines in northwest Iowa is expected to begin this year as part of a MidAmerican Energy Co. wind expansion project.
The 123-megawatt wind energy project will be located in Pocahontas County. Completion of the project is expected by the end of next year, the company said in a statement.
The project is in addition to a 99-megawatt wind project in Crawford and Carroll counties in west central Iowa.
Invenergy Wind Development Iowa, a division of Chicago-based Invenergy Wind LLC, is building the 99-megawatt wind facility in Carroll and Crawford counties that will include 66 wind turbines.
The Pocahontas County project will be built by Escondido, Calif.-based enXco Development Corp.
The Iowa Utilities Board approved MidAmerican’s plans to build up to 545 megawatts of new wind-powered electric generation in Iowa before the end of 2007.

The Iowa Utilities Board approved MidAmerican’s plans to build up to 545 megawatts of new wind-powered electric generation in Iowa before the end of 2007.
The ultimate size of the expansion project, its overall cost and additional locations have not been finalized. Electric rates for MidAmerican customers in Iowa will remain at current levels at least through 2010 pursuant to an IUB order approving the project.
The Des Moines-based company is Iowa’s largest energy company, providing electricity to customers in the Quad-City region as well as other parts of Iowa and Illinois, Nebraska and South Dakota.
