Storm bends, snaps propellers on wind turbines

Residents reported to the National Weather Service that two wind turbines were damaged. One had a propeller bent in half and the second had a propeller with the tip snapped off.


NORTHWOOD, Iowa -- Strong thunderstorms moving through northern Iowa caused damage to a wind farm near Northwood Friday morning.

The storm hit around 4:25 a.m. in Worth County.

Residents reported to the National Weather Service that two wind turbines were damaged. One had a propeller bent in half and the second had a propeller with the tip snapped off.

Wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph were reported in Worth County.

Numerous trees and a power pole were reported damaged. Some corn fields were also flattened by the strong winds.

Nickel-sized hail was also reported near Mallard in Palo Alto County while ping pong sized hail was reported by a trained storm spotter in Worth County.
