Legislature enacts wind energy bill

AUGUSTA (May 25): The Maine Legislature, enacted a bill Wednesday, May 24, designed to promote the development of wind energy in Maine.

The bill’s sponsor is Sen. Ethan Strimling, D-Cumberland County.

It provides sales and income tax incentives for wind energy development and wind energy equipment projects that are 10 megawatts or smaller.

“Now more than ever, we need to look towards renewable energies that can help our communities and state become more energy independent,” said Strimling. “Incentives in these small-scale wind projects helps make us more economically viable and helps Maine get used to wind on a smaller scale. This is the way everyone has done it for years.”

Rep. Ken Fletcher, R-Winslow, lead co-sponsor of the bill, said, “This is one more step in the right direction to achieve Maine’s renewable energy potential.”
