The digest version of Scandia Wind LLC’s latest proposal was presented to the Oceana County Board of Commissioners June 24.

Administrator Sue Johnson told the board that Scandia’s plan for a Lake Michigan wind farm off the Oceana County coast from Pentwater to the Mason County line has been reduced to 250 megawatts with the nearest turbine being four miles from shore. The distance of its proposed wind farms to the south are six miles from the Grand Haven shoreline, and 10 miles from the Muskegon shoreline, Johnson said.

The original plan was for a 1,000 megawatt wind farm off Oceana and Mason county coastlines, but those plans have been altered in recent months. Approximately half the wind farm is now proposed for the Grand Haven and Muskegon areas. Mason County commissioners voted earlier this month against supporting the project, and that portion of the project north of the Oceana County line has been removed. Pentwater village and township have both passed resolutions opposing the project.

The company also continues to focus on assisting in creating wind turbine manufacturing support facilities. In a June 22 e-mail, Scandia CEO Steve Warner wrote the company “… would like to continue advancing the initiative to grow West Michigan’s participation in the wind industry supply chain. Opportunities exist today in the onshore wind industry, and West Michigan’s manufacturing base is well suited in terms of supplying some of the 8,000 parts in a wind turbine.”

Board Chairman Larry VanSickle said, as an example, each wind turbine tower has a ladder inside and that some local company should be able to make ladders.

Johnson also presented board members with a business plan provided by Scandia. The business model Warner included as an example was for Navitas Networks in Norway that he said could serve as a template for a similar organization here. The idea is to form a consortium of area industries that would be non-profit, non-political and owned by member companies. Area companies Warner included as possible candidates include:

  • Verplank/Shape
  • JSJ
  • Diversified Machine
  • Gentex
  • Port City Group
  • L3 Communications
  • Falcon Tool and Die
  • Eagle Alloy
  • CWC
  • Wilbur Products
  • Alcoa
  • Disher Design
  • Shellcast

Scandia is still scheduled to make a 6:30 p.m. presentation on its proposal at the Hart Middle School auditorium Aug. 4. The Lake Michigan POWER coalition also is invited. The presentation will be hosted by the Oceana County Planning Commission. The county board referred Scandia’s request for county support to the planning commission this spring and is waiting on its recommendation.
