The Union City, Ind., wind turbine Tuesday experienced a failure of one of the rotor blade's tip brake mechanisms during commissioning and testing of the unit. According to city officials, no one was harmed by the failure, and the turbine has been locked down into safe mode.
Information provided Wednesday by the turbine manufacturer, Nordic Windpower, said the failure will prevent the wind turbine from operating and producing electricity until the defective parts are repaired or replaced. Nordic has guaranteed the defect will be properly remedied at their cost. A Nordic spokesman said once the failure is remedied, the turbine will perform as promised.

Union City, Ind. Mayor Bryan Conklin said the blades will be replaced, rather than attempting to make repairs on the end of the blade. The replacement is expected to take 30 days.
Nordic has said it will reimburse the City of Union City for all lost energy production revenue between now and when the turbine is fully operational. The wind speeds will be monitored to determine the extent of the lost energy revenue.
