No progress on Galloo wind farm promises

We were promised activity and updates on the important but open aspects of a decommissioning plan and a transmission line alternate route through the town of Hounsfield. When eight Jefferson County legislators voted yes to allow tax breaks, we all feared that our leverage was lost and a bad deal was just made worse.

When eight Jefferson County legislators voted yes to allow tax breaks, we all feared that our leverage was lost and a bad deal was just made worse.

To alleviate the public outcry, the developer was forced at the eleventh hour to offer contingency payments that we were told would be offered all along, and an alternate route was proposed to silence Ellisburg, Henderson and Oswego County. An update on the activity of the project to date results in the following:

The town of Henderson has filed an Article 78 Proceeding based on over 20 different procedural inadequacies of the state Department of Environmental Conservation and town of Hounsfield's Planning Board actions in approving this project.

In discussion with the Public Service Commission, no new route application has been filed as of Feb. 22. The original route through Henderson and down to Oswego County is still the route of record.

We were promised activity and updates on the important but open aspects of a decommissioning plan and a transmission line alternate route through the town of Hounsfield. When eight Jefferson County legislators voted yes to allow tax breaks, we all feared that our leverage was lost and a bad deal was just made worse.

To alleviate the public outcry, the developer was forced at the eleventh hour to offer contingency payments that we were told would be offered all along, and an alternate route was proposed to silence Ellisburg, Henderson and Oswego County. An update on the activity of the project to date results in the following:

■ The town of Henderson has filed an Article 78 Proceeding based on over 20 different procedural inadequacies of the state Department of Environmental Conservation and town of Hounsfield's Planning Board actions in approving this project.

■ In discussion with the Public Service Commission, no new route application has been filed as of Feb. 22. The original route through Henderson and down to Oswego County is still the route of record.

■ Just recently a grassroots effort of influential property owners in the town of Hounsfield has just taken off protesting their town's actions in essentially using planned eminent domain by offering their town as a host for the transmission line. The property owners allege they have not been afforded justice or an opportunity for protest, review and discussion.

■ Sen. Charles Schumer's office has also been contacted to inquire about the massive amounts of stimulus funds Upstate NY Power plans to send to China to buy Vestas turbines and force more union manufacturing jobs offshore.

■ Total dismissal of the completely underwater route to Oswego County, as it was deemed too expensive.

This seems to be the way with this project, hurry up and wait, hidden information and unfinished business. This is not the way a business deal should have been conducted. Frequent town hall-type meetings that were open and transparent would have resulted in the dialogue we are now having, after we have sold our shores.

As I stated to our legislators at the ill-fated meeting, the payment-in-lieu-of-taxes enabling resolution was passed, you cannot undo your yes vote; no was the only choice then, and it looks like that should have been those eight men's choice that evening.
