Wind farm developers add to size of project

The developers of Douglas Woods Wind have increased the acreage of the wind farm site, but have reduced the number of proposed turbines. American Pro Wind appeared before the Zoning Board of Appeals last night for a height and use variance for 22.5 acres adjacent to the 275 acres that the ZBA approved similar variances for last year. In addition, American Pro Wind requested an extension of the previously approved variance.

American Pro Wind appeared before the Zoning Board of Appeals last night for a height and use variance for 22.5 acres adjacent to the 275 acres that the ZBA approved similar variances for last year. In addition, American Pro Wind requested an extension of the previously approved variance.

In making the variance request, American Pro Wind said the total site of Douglas Woods Wind will now increase to 298 acres. American Pro Wind had previously said Douglas Woods Wind would be a 13-turbine wind farm. Rod Jané, a consultant for American Pro Wind, said the results of various studies have prompted the company to reduce the number of turbines proposed for the original 275 acres to 10 turbines, and place the 11th turbine on the 22.5 acres it is acquiring from private owners.

In addition, Mr. Jané said, each of the turbines now being considered for the project will produce 2.5 megawatts of energy, rather than 2 megawatts, for an overall production of 27.5 megawatts. The ZBA will review the variance application and continued the public hearing until 7:15 p.m. March 3.
