The Barrington Town Council made it official Monday night: The wind turbine project proposed for Legion Way is off the table.

A recent wind study ordered by the town and completed by the firm AWS Truewind showed lower-than-expected wind speeds for the site.

At the meeting on Monday night, council member Kate Weymouth motioned to accept a recommendation from the Committee for Renewable Energy for Barrington to not move forward with construction of a turbine at Legion Way, "at this time."

The motion passed 3-0. Council member Jeff Brenner recused himself from the issue and member John Lazzaro was not at the meeting.

The chairman for the Committee for Renewable Energy for Barrington, David Baum, told council members that the results of the wind study were somewhat surprising. The town has been exploring the installation of a wind turbine for more than a year. The project was originally proposed for the high school campus, but later moved to Legion Way. A number of residents in town have opposed different aspects of the project, both when it was proposed for the high school and after it was re-located.
