Hull Adding Second Wind Turbine

HULL The largest commercial wind turbine on the east coast will reside in Hull.

The Vestas V80 will soon provide power to 750 houses and save taxpayers $500,000 per year.

The turbine and its 148-foot blades will be constructed at the town dump on George Washington Boulevard. The massive generator is being delivered from the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy. A 240 ton crane was needed to lift the generator on to a barge.

Hull installed its first wind turbine, a much smaller version, four years ago. The 165 foot structure was constructed behind the town's high school. Its 75 foot long fiberglass blades rotate at a constant speed of 28 m.p.h.

When both are up and running, which could happen by March 1, the twin turbines will supply one-third of the town's energy supply.
