(Austin, Texas) ----- The Coastal Habitat Alliance - a coalition of eleven Texas-based and national organizations working to preserve the Texas Gulf Coast - today expressed satisfaction that the Public Utility Commission (PUC) of Texas has agreed to hear their appeal regarding the group's intervenor status in the AEP 345 kV transmission line case to be held on October 17 in Austin. The transmission line would extend for 21 miles in an east/west direction across Kenedy County. The transmission line is being proposed to serve a 600-turbine industrial wind project located within the Laguna Madre coastal region. The CHA has been fighting for a hearing to examine the potential impacts from the 345 kV transmission line to migratory birds, bats, butterflies and other species, and to examine the compliance of the project with the protection of the sensitive coastal region under the Coastal Management Program.

Says CHA founder and environmental lawyer Jim Blackburn: "This 345 kV transmission line should be thoroughly reviewed and all environmental impacts related to it should be fully explored and carefully considered by the PUC. We are pleased that the PUC commissioners chose to hear the concerns of our member organizations. The CHA represents Texans who care deeply about migratory birds and the coastal habitat that protects the Laguna Madre. By agreeing to consider our appeal the Commission has given us a chance to convince them of the merits of our intervention. We are hopeful that they will agree and allow us to fully present our concerns through the hearing process."
