18,000 speak out over giant pylon upgrades

Scottish and Southern Energy claims the line needs to be upgraded to allow windfarms to link to the national grid.

MORE than 17,000 people have responded to plans for a line of giant pylons between the Highlands and Stirling.

Allan Wilson, deputy enterprise minister, said the Scottish Executive had received about 18,000 responses to its consultation on the upgrade between Beauly and Denny, with 9047 objections recorded and just 36 responses in favour. About 9000 of the responses are still to be assessed.

However, residents fear the pylons – which will be up to 213ft high – will damage the landscape and harm tourism. Objectors include George Reid, the Scottish Parliament's presiding officer, and Lord Lovat, chief of the clan Fraser.

Peter Pearson, secretary of Stirling Before Pylons, said: "It seems inevitable given this strength of feeling that there will have to be a public inquiry to consider the application."
