Turbine burns at Kent Hills wind farm fire

Lisa

August 16, 2009 8:44:08 AM

Egin, Salisbury & Riverview Fire responded to a windmill on fire at TransAlta's Kent Hills wind facility in Parkingdale/ Caledonia Mountain at 8:48am.

There was nothing the Fire departments could do but watch the turbine burn. Firefighters followed standard protocol recommended by wind turbine manufactuers which requires personnel to allow the turbine to burn out and arrest any fires that might start on the ground due to falling debris.

The TransAlta wind facility is located about 30 kms outside of Riverview New Brunswick. This video aired on CTV , CBC & Global NEWS.

Ontario's Green Energy Act Paradox

Lisa

June 19, 2009 9:12:25 AM

The Ontario Green Energy Act, passed in May 2009, is extremely popular with the public notwithstanding both its infringements on basic individual and democratic rights, and also the substantially higher electricity rates it will cause. This post suggests that close coordination between government, renewable energy businesses, and environmental organizations, particularly government funding of environmental groups, helps to explain the political success of the legislation.

This video was part of a panel presentation by Tom Adams at the York University Osgoode Hall Law School Professional Development conference June 15, 2009.

Bill Fish wants the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to investigate homemade windmills after his neighbours device came crashing through his roof during yesterdays high winds.

He was shocked awake around 3 a.m. when an eight-foot-long wooden blade penetrated the roof, before piercing through the ceiling and wall in a sewing room of his Dufferin Avenue home, located outside of Wallaceburg in Chatham Township. Newspaper account of the incident here.

Health impacts from the Melancthon wind energy facility

Save Our Skyline Renfrew County (sosrenfrewcounty.wordpress.com) conducted this interview with Helen Fraser whose home, where she had lived for more than 30 years, was surrounded by turbines.

Ms. Fraser discusses the health issues she suffered after the Melancthon wind energy facility near Shelburne, Ontario, began operation in the spring of 2006. In total, tewlve turbines were visible on three sides of her home, the closest only 423 meters away. Eight of the turbines had an obvious direct impact on her home, with noise or shadow flicker. Shortly after the turbines went online. Ms. Fraser began having severe head and body aches, ringing in her ears, digestive issues, and chronic fatigue.

Wind turbine noise: Suncor wind farm Ripley, Ontario

Lisa

May 14, 2008 10:22:44 AM

This video of the Suncor wind farm in Ripley Ontario was recorded using a personal video recorder. Given the difficulties of capturing noise using consumer video products, Windaction.org consulted with two individuals with experience with wind turbine noise: Rene Taylor of McLean County, IL and Richard James of E-Coustic Solutions (Okemos, MI). Ms. Taylor lives within 1500 of Horizon Wind's Twin Grove wind energy facility. Their comments are important to consider when listening to the video.

Rene Taylor: "I viewed the Canadian video last night and feel this is a true representation of turbine sound.  I have taken many videos with similar sound and am always frustrated because it comes out much softer than what we actually hear.  I'm sure this is the case with this video as well."

Richard James: The video appears to pick up the audible sound of the wind turbines. The problem with recordings taken with consumer products (other than lack of calibration) is that microphones do not handle low frequency sounds and thus the recording lacks that omnipresence that real wind turbines produce. The microphones on consumer video products are biased toward capturing human voices. It is clear that the Ontario audio is missing much of the low frequency content from about 250 Hz down. It is the lower frequency sounds of the turbines that penetrate homes and vibrate buildings.

Wind farms in Ontario CA

Lisa

December 08, 2007 2:36:51 PM

The wind power industry has exploded in Canada, but opponents have accused wind farm developers of endangering birds, harming locals' health and putting up eyesores that do little but create noise and produce insufficient levels of energy.
